Senior Citizen Discounts

This cartoon appeared in the Sunday newspaper comics section. It reminded me of an experience that made me realize I had become a senior citizen. It’s a fun story that brought a laugh then and still does today.
My wife and I were on the MTR train in Hong Kong one weekend afternoon. It was a beautiful day in the fall, sunshine, blue skies, and cool temperatures. In Hong Kong, the MTR trains crossing the city are never empty and often, full of standing room only. With a population of 7.5 million, being packed in on a MTR train is a norm rather than an exception. It is a very efficient and successful form of transportation in the city. Most of the riders are quiet but at times, there may be laughter and serious discussions amid the cajoling in the crowd.
The MTR corporation (“MTRC”) does an excellent job in managing the operation and reminding riders to maintain a courteous and proper decorum while on the train. They efficiently communicate their messages in numerous ways via signage, announcements, posters in the concourse, on the platforms, etc. to promote an enjoyable experience for everyone.
One of these messages is a simple, yet very meaningful one. It asks younger riders to offer their seat to a senior citizen.
On that afternoon when we boarded the train, it was as expected, standing room only. I am accustomed to standing on the train and often prefer it. I would also (if I was seated) gladly offer my seat to a senior. Totally unexpected and to my surprise, a young girl addressed me with respect, sincerity, and a very courteous smile. She stood up and offered me her seat. The tables have turned. Seems I was being regarded as a senior. It took me by surprise, and I returned the smile, thanking her for the offer but asked her to remain seated. I told her I was fine standing, not wanting to believe that I was being considered a senior.
She very politely insisted and again with a sincere smile. It was an offer I should not refuse, and it made me feel good, so I asked my wife to sit down. Her friend who was traveling with her immediately stood up as well so that I could sit with my wife. With a large crowd, it was difficult to thank them properly. Several stops later, they disembarked with a wave and a smile.
When we got to our destination and disembarked ourselves, I thought about this experience. I realized that while I did not think I was a senior, others viewed me as one. Together, my wife and I laughed, and she chimed, “you know you are a senior now.”
Becoming a senior citizen is not a negative, it is another phase in life. To age properly is a gift.
Our golden years should be exactly that, golden. Senior discounts offered by many establishments around the world is a recognition and welcomed. Take advantage of this recognition. Not bad at all.
